WIC provides free wireless to support Augmented Reality
Dunedin, New Zealand (September 28, 2010) – Wireless Internet Connections (WIC) has deployed wireless hotspots across Dunedin CBD and suburbs providing free Wi-fi to locals, tourists, business travellers and other mobile users. WIC is a collaborative partner in the Augmented Reality project alongside local companies Mkxplay, Carswell Calder and iVisit and together with Dunedin Venues to support the delivery of media onto mobile platforms that will provide an enhanced experience of Dunedin city.
“We are proud to support the Augmented Reality project by using our wireless infrastructure to deliver rich media content to mobile users.”, said Stu Fleming, Chief Technical Officer at WIC. “We have deployed 30 hotspots across Dunedin since March 2010 and demonstrated a sustained growth rate of 400 users per month. As of September 2010, nearly 2000 people have registered to use the system and hundreds use it every day. Augmented Reality is a great opportunity to demonstrate the power of our wireless network in the delivery of large quantities of rich digital media to many mobile users at low cost.”
Developed as a solution based on reliable, low-cost wireless hardware supported by back-end Web and secure database servers, operating costs are supported partly by local advertising and sponsorship. All users must register their e-mail address and contact details through a simple and easy to use login portal before being able to use the service.
WIC infrastructure is already in use by Otago Polytechnic to extend the reach of its campus wireless network across Dunedin city. The wireless network also supports a number of webcams capturing iconic views of Dunedin city.
WIC will continue with the deployment of wireless hotspots in support of Augmented Reality, with a rollout plan for the remainder of 2010 and first half of 2011 targetting the central business district, heritage areas, museums, cafes and outdoor public spaces.
